R Billy!

R Logo R! No, it’s not Talk Like a Pirate Day. I just wanted to install R on my Ubuntu laptop to see if it can read some SPSS files that PSPP failed to open. (No fault of PSPP, I believe. Seems the trouble is the source of my SPSS files.)

I Googled “ubuntu 12.04 R” and found my self at a web page that suggested that I import keys and edit sources and add a repository. It just seemed unnecessarily complicated.

I tried “apt-get install r-base r-recommended” and that did it.

So there you have it. How do you install R on Ubuntu 12.04? Pretty much like you install anything else. R! 🙂

Your question is moot. All SPSS files can be opened by PSPP. Some but not all can be opened by R.

That was the expectation. The trouble appears to be the system that produced the SPSS files. I’ve tried half a dozen different files and had essentially the same “duplicate variable name” error with each one. R gave the same error in its own words. The people in charge where those files came from are looking into it.

Thanks for the tip. Once the bug in the production of those files is fixed, I’ll concentrate on learning to use PSPP first. (Saying “first” very optimistically. In the real world I’ll probably drop from old age before I have time to learn both!)
